| | | Balancing Business & Life During the Holidaysby Dawn Varga November 20, 2021
The holidays are filled with family, fun and good cheer. They should be a time to recharge and relax and get ready for the new year that is upon us. But how much of that time will you and your employees actually get to enjoy if you have to keep your business running?
A 2014 study found that more that 40% of employees neglect other aspects of their life because of work, causing stress and other problems in their personal lives. During the holidays, that stress can be compounded with the addition of the time and financial burdens that come with holiday shopping, travelling, and get-togethers. | | | | To complicate matters even more, when employees are having personal issues, their work often suffers as well. So how do you preserve your employees' well-being while keeping your business running smoothly during the holidays? Here are a few tips: - Encourage taking vacation days during the holidays to not only enjoy time with their families and friends, but to also come back rested and more productive upon their return.
- Cross-train your workers so any single employee doesn't feel guilty or obligated to not take time off because "no one else can do their job".
- Reward your employees for all their hard work throughout the year by providing travel vouchers for them to take time for themselves or cash bonuses to ease the financial burdens of the season.
- Be flexible with your work schedule. Every employee celebrates the season in a different way. Allow them to choose their own days off or to shift their start/stop times. Offer a four-day work week option to allow extra time for shopping and family.
- Be a good role model and show your employees how it's done by also taking time for yourself. And don't email or call an employee that is on holiday, unless it is a true emergency.
- Appreciate your employees by gifting an unscheduled afternoon (or two) off without it affecting their pay. They will welcome the time off and appreciate your generosity.
- Lessen the workload during the holidays by hiring temporary employees, seasonal help, or the assistance of a agency. You may even find an amazing new employee or agency partner to work with year-round!
The holidays only come once a year, so be sure to take all the steps necessary to balance good business operations with your employees' personal needs so you all can enjoy a happy, healthy, and prosperous holiday season and beyond!

How to Survive the “Holidaze” in Business & Life! by Daniela Bumann of Vibrant Living Int.
Holiday stress statistics show that up to 69 percent of people are stressed by the feeling of having a “lack of time,” 69% are stressed by perceiving a “lack of money,” and 51% are stressed out about the “pressure to give or get gifts.” ... They're present at work, but are underperforming.
What to DO & HOW to Shift = New Thinking/Doing for Result Circumstances may not change, but YOU CAN, if you Choose
Tools & Strategies to Re-gain Control - Stay mindfully present in the moment: (vs. automated reactions), giving YOU the power to adjust and re-prioritize accordingly in business and life. Intention: “I choose to stay calm, focused…”
- Plan ahead: Anticipate, collaborate, clarify expectation at work/with partner.
- Hire part-time Help: Assistant, caregiver for family member, sitter, maid.
- Make a TO-DO & NOT-DO list: Abide it. Don`t compromise values. Choose wisely from your values and honor priorities.
- Know your circumstances: Changes and grief are often stirred up during this time. Acknowledge it and give yourself permission to pause/ feel. Keep it REAL.
- Know your weakest link: Recognize weaknesses/ strengths. Know yourself and how you deal; drinking, over eating..
- Boundaries - avoid the guilt trap: Know your own worth. Say NO and mean it. Urgency is relative.
- Give yourself Win/Win options: To fall back on. Victim to Victorious = Choice.
Don’t fight it: Stay mindful (not mind-full) in the midst of extra stress = adjust your actions response-able vs. overreacting. Practice compassion: Holiday kindness and compassion isn`t compassion if it does not include yourself. Practice it. Pause & refuel: Know when to hit the Pause Button to prevent burnout etc. Cultivate REAL connection: (vs. too many events draining stamina). Cultivate a sense of sharing, support, community.
