Headlines + Happenings

December 9, 2024

Over the last year, your support has allowed us to continue our mission of preserving and protecting SC's historic buildings and places, advocating for their productive use, and promoting the state's diverse cultural legacy. Here are a few highlights from this year, made possible with your support.

Taveau Church

This year has been transformative for Taveau Church. Since acquiring the property from the United Methodist Conference in June 2023, we have secured $600,000 in grant funding and completed emergency stabilization of the building. Thanks to our project partners, including preservation contractor, Meadors, Inc.,

Taveau's future is longer in doubt. With this critical work complete, we are now actively engaging community members to envision the future of Taveau post-restoration.

We are grateful for the support provided by The Asiko Group, who is facilitating  this stewardship phase, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, who provided funding for this work. We look forward to providing an update on The Asiko Group's community engagement in the new year.

The Edgefield Hotel

In August, the Edgefield Hotel was acquired by B&B Real Estate Company, a South Carolina-based developer with a track record in preservation and community development.

Since the historic property was donated to Preservation SC in 2017, we have sought a preservation-minded developer to transform the building into a space that honors its history and serves the community. We are excited to have B&B Real Estate Company take on this initiative and we look forward to seeing this building brought back to life.

The Pottersville House

Our other big project in Edgefield with significant movement this past year is the Pottersville House. In September 2024, we shared the news that the Town of Edgefield acquired the house and obtained a grant from the SC Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism.

The purpose of the grant is to interpret and ensure the sustainability of the Edgefield Stoneware industry, with the Pottersville House playing a pivotal role in the effort, given its distinction as a structure from the Town's early pottery history. We remain committed to this historic property and its stabilization, and will continue to partner with the Town in implementing this project.

The Dawkins House

In June, we announced that the Dawkins House will be the new home of the USC-Union Alumni Center. As such, it will provide the campus, as well as the community, access to a space for campus, corporate and community

related meetings, events, and receptions. This Alumni Center will not only benefit USC-Union, but will serve as an economic engine for the City and County of Union, bringing alumni dollars back to Union for visits and potential employment with local companies. We look forward to sharing more updates as we start stabilization with Huss Construction in the new year.

Gaye Sanders Fisher

This year, we were fortunate to receive a bequest from our friend, Gaye Sanders Fisher of Charleston, South Carolina. We were initially introduced to Gaye in 2018 at a book signing event held at the Huguenot Church in Charleston. Inspired by "South Carolina's Sacred Spaces", authored by her friend and Preservation South Carolina board member, Bill

Fitzpatrick, Gaye generously decided to paint a few of SC's churches and donate all proceeds from the sale of originals and prints to our organization. Gaye Sanders Fisher has left an enduring legacy with Preservation South Carolina, and we are deeply grateful for her exceptional support.

Glenn Keyes, Governor's Award Recipient

The South Carolina Historic Preservation Awards

Please join us, along with the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, and the Office of the Governor in celebrating and thanking this year's recipients for their exceptional accomplishments in the preservation, rehabilitation and interpretation of our state’s architectural and cultural heritage.

This year’s recipient of the Governor’s Award is Glenn Keyes, architect in Charleston. Glenn Keyes has been a leader in the field of historic preservation in South Carolina for nearly 40 years. Throughout his impactful career, Glenn has overseen the preservation, rehabilitation, or restoration of more than 400 historic buildings across the state, both public and private.

Please join us in congratulating the 2024 South Carolina Historic Preservation Award recipients. Recipients and award details can be found here.

Preservation South Carolina would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season.
